Elemi  (Canarium luzonicum)
Elemi (Canarium luzonicum)

* (Sizes) Elemi

Origin:  Philippines
Family:  Burseraceae
Process:  Steam distilled - Resin

Description:  Native to the Philippines, this species is a tall tree (up to 98 feet ) which exudes a white or yellow natural resin.  It is only when the tree sprouts leaves that a pale resin is produced.  It solidifies on contact with the air and stops when the last leaf falls.  The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the resin.  It is closely related to the trees yielding frankincense, myrrh and opopanax.  The ancient Egyptians included elemi in embalming because of its preservative properties.  Since the 15th century it has been used in a wide varierty of medicinal uses such as balms, liniments, respiratory, and skin care products.

The essential oil is colorless to pale yellow and the scent has a fresh, peppery-spicy, lemony odor.

The essential oil contains mainly phellandrene, dipentene, elemol, elemicin, terpineol, carvone, terpinolene, among others.

Product Application:

Essential oils should never be applied directly on the skin without diluting properly, usually blending with a carrier oil.
